NYS on verge of voting on new gun laws

ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVB) — New York State is on the verge of voting on a new gun control law just one month after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is putting the proposed law on a very fast track in the hopes of making NYS the first state to pass stricter gun control measures since the school shooting in Newtown, CT.

A package of gun bills is expected to be voted on Monday night that would prohibit the sale of certain assault style weapons, prohibit the sale of 10-shot clips (NYS would now allow 7-shot clips), and require background checks even for the sale of some guns sold from one private party to another.

Cheektowaga Democratic Assemblyman Dennis Gabryszak says he likes some of these changes but doesn't want it rushed through.

"I'm sitting here talking to you about gun legislation that we're going to be voting on this afternoon that we haven't even seen yet. We've heard bits and pieces of it, and some of the things that are going to be in it, until you actually get that piece of paper, sit down and read it, it brings different meaning to it that way," Gabryszak said.

Gabryszak says lawmakers are on recess until 9 p.m., at which time they may have a bill to vote on. If they do, debate could go past midnight before a vote actually takes place.

Union workers from Remington Arms in the Mohawk Valley drove a couple hours to Albany late Monday to protest this tentative deal, saying a ban on assault-style weapons that they produce will result in layoffs.
