(LIN) - President Barack Obama addressed the nation Tuesday night in what could have been his last State of the Union address.

"We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by. Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules."--Obama, in the State of the Union address.

"No feature of the Obama presidency has been sadder than its constant effort to divide us, to curry favor with some Americans by castigating others…As in previous moments of national danger, we Americans are all in the same boat." --Gov. Mitch Daniels, R-Ind., in the GOP’s response to Obama’s State of the Union address.

"One of these days we'll have a conversation about Newt Gingrich. I know a lot about him. I served on the investigative committee that investigated him… four of us locked in a room in an undisclosed location for a year…a thousand pages of his stuff."--House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., hinting of skeletons in the closet of 2012 Republican candidate and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga.

"Look, I think if she knows something she ought to say it. If she doesn't know something she ought to quit saying it. But this is baloney. I don't think any Republican is going to be threatened by Nancy Pelosi."--Gingrich, after Pelosi said "there's something I know" about the former speaker that may hurt his chances of being elected president.

"Uh, at this stage if he were the VP and I was the president, why that's something I'd consider. But I have to be honest with you, um, I haven't made any considerations as to who would be my VP at this point, I think it'd be presumptuous. " --Former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., after being asked if he’d consider Gingrich as a potential running mate.

"Every day, I am working hard. I will recover and will return, and we will work together again, for Arizona and for all Americans."--Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., in her letter of resignation to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

"The House of Representative has been made proud by this extraordinary daughter of the House. Gabby, we love you, we have missed you."--Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., in one of many congressional tributes to Giffords.

"I might have tacos when I go home; I'm not quite sure yet."--East Haven, Conn., Mayor Joseph Maturo, when asked by a TV reporter what he's doing for the Hispanic community after four police officers were accused of harassing Latino residents and businesses. Maturo later apologized.

"I think it is absolutely essential that we take necessary actions to ensure that air travel is safe and I believe that is what TSA is tasked with doing."--White House spokesman Jay Carney, defending the Transportation Security Administration after Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., a frequent critic of the TSA, was stopped by security at the Nashville airport Monday.

"I said to him, you know, I have always respected the office of the president and that the book is what the book is." --Gov. Jan Brewer, R-Ariz., after it appeared she and Obama were engaged in an intense conversation at the base of Air Force One's steps when the president landed in Arizona. Brewer was referring to “Scorpions for Breakfast,” a book she authored describing her life and her crackdown on illegal immigrants, which Obama opposes.
